Why I Stopped Eating Sugar And Never Looked Back

my journey

My journey to healthy nutrition and Rock on Divas started with my own battle with cancer, but it’s become so much more than that. It’s given me a whole new lease of life that I never knew was possible – here’s how…

How did it all start?

When I was diagnosed with cancer I decided I wanted to really educate myself on how to prepare my body to support itself. Up until that point I had been the Sugar Queen – the Lindt chocolate balls were my favourite! However, one of the things that I discovered was that refined sugar is one of many elements that encourages cancer cells to thrive and multiply.

As I recovered from cancer I continued wanting to be as healthy as possible, but of course I am not perfect and every now and again I have a craving for an indulgent sugar fix… and you know what? I have it. Eighty percent of the time however I stick to healthy and natural alternatives.

What are the challenges?

The biggest challenge is making sure I have something on hand when a craving hits and having the time to prepare those healthy nibbles. So the best advice is to try to prepare food in advance and keep snacks available. Personal favourites are carrot sticks, nuts, sweet potato fries and my home made nut balls – more on that another time!

I also can’t stress enough the importance of having water with you all the time. Every time you think you’re hungry, have a little water and wait 10 minutes before eating – it may well be that you’re just dehydrated!

What are the benefits?

It sounds like a lot of effort and if you haven’t had a big health trauma like cancer, it’s very easy to think it doesn’t really matter, but the impact of removing refined sugar from my diet has been life enhancing in so many ways.

I have more energy, I feel healthier and I think more clearly, I don’t get that mid-afternoon slump, my skin is better, my weight is more balanced and I don’t crave processed foods any more.

Strangely enough, although I allow myself sweets every now and again, over time my taste buds have changed so much that all too often those things I used to crave are now too sweet for me!

In short, my journey to ditching sugar has not felt like one of denial or loss, but one of phenomenal gain, all for the sake of a little preparation!
