NEW is up to you – rock the new year

Keeping healthy eating habits with proper food nutrition is a difficult balancing act for most people. There are many complications that can make maintaining a healthy diet difficult, among them the tendency toward eating “junk” food or other unhealthy items. One thing that many people do not often anticipate is the lack of knowledge or understanding about food nutrition.

But by taking the time to properly educate yourself on food nutrition, you will be able to choose a diet that is right for you and your body.

What does your body need?

While food nutrition guides seem to be a great help, and breaking foods down into groups can be a great way of maintaining a good balance, it’s important to remember that every person in this world is different. For example, some people may require more or fewer calories than other people. Health conditions may prevent certain people from eating certain foods or food types, and they will need to adjust their diets accordingly. By working with your doctor, health coach or nutritionist you will be able to determine exactly what your body needs, this is a great first step toward understanding what your body needs.

What does Food Contain?

After you have discovered what your body needs to thrive, you then need to start learning about the various benefits of the different kinds of foods.  When you start out it is always a good idea to keep a chart or reference guide of the various food groups and the benefits and nutrients they have for you.  For instance, did you know that the small berry, which is packed with anthocyanidins and antioxidants can help you with blood pressure and your mental health?

By making note of these benefits and understanding which ones are the best for you, it will then be easy for you to mix and match foods that will not only create a delicious meal, but will also create a wholesome and healthy diet.

What are the Labels telling you?

When you are walking down the aisle of a shopping mall, all the nutritional information that you need is available on the label.  Start a habit of taking a conscious note of the layout of the label and avoid potential mistakes that most people today make.  Look at the top 5 ingredients that are listed on the label, if sugar appears on the list and it’s one of the first 5 ingredients, that means the product contains a high amount of sugar, especially if it appears first on the list.

What a Food Journal can do for you!

Keeping track of what you eat and how it affects you and your digestive system is a great way to start learning what your body needs to function properly.  It is also a good way to start creating a diet plan that is specific to your health needs.  The whole idea around a food journal is to write down how you feel 30 minutes to an hour after you have had a meal or a snack, this is a fantastic way to get to know your body and to listen to the messages it is sending you!
